THE GAP:
High up on the mountain, when medical contingency strikes, there is no doctor available at hand. It is mostly left to the climbers to mount a response, often without requisite competencies or with knowledge learnt in the safety of classrooms which may not be practically relevant under the pressures of real-time high altitude conditions.
THE NEED:
In order to close this, ”Know-Do” Gap, this course is designed as a hands-on learning-in-action that is embedded within a real-time mountaineering expedition to a 6000 M+ peak. The expedition merely serves as a base upon which this multi-modular course in expedition medicine unfolds.
THE PURPOSE :
To build multi-purpose skills capacity, capability and competence in mountaineers to effectively plan and manage: expedition health & medical contingencies and also: emerge as competent first responders during disasters on the mountains.
THE VISION:
Creation of FIRST AID MOUNTAIN LEADERS capable of responding to mountaineering and disaster related Health and Medical Contingencies.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
Action Learning within graded high altitude context on a real-time basis leading to acquisition of :
(a) SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ATTITUDES RELEVANT TO THE PLANNING AND MAKING OF FIRST AID RESPONSE TO CONTINGENCIES ARISING IN AN EXPEDITION
(b) Effective : LEADERSHIP TO THE TEAM & COMMUNITIES IN DISASTERS & MULTI-CASUALTY EVENTS ON MOUNTAINS.
CURRICULUM BLUE PRINT:
The course will progressively evolve and unfold as a series of graded altitude and context specific multi-modular contents within the formation a real time moving expedition to a 6000 M plus peak.
The Learning Pathway is structured by four inter dependent nodes:
beginning at :
(i) THE IMF: with a focus on delivery of core knowledge, shifting next to :
(ii) the MOUNTAIN VILLAGE COMMUNITY, with a focus on: community Health and Environment, and then progressively up the mountain to:
(iii) The BASE CAMP with a focus on Base Camp Medicine,
(iv) The UPPER MOUNTAIN, where Learning will take place through ‘SIMULATION EXPERCISES’ at : ABC,C-I, C-II, Summit Camp and on the Summit day.
ASSESSMENT :
will be done employing a blend of FORMATIVE (Log Books & Feed back) & SUMMATIVE assessment protocols.
Course Duration : 25-28 days
ELIGIBILITY:
Course Qualified Practicing Mountaineers, with a minimum age of 24 years. Course Strength : Maximum of 15 participants.
